Course Selection

Counselors will meet with current KHS 9th-11th graders about creating an Academic Plan at the end of January 2025. (Current Kirkwood 8th graders will choose classes in February. See more information below.) It is important that students realize they are selecting courses they would like for their schedule for next school year. And any additional courses added to their Academic Plan beyond next school year will be revisited and adjusted in the future.
Students are encouraged to reflect on their interests and strengths when selecting classes. As well as having conversations with parents, teachers and counselors to help navigate their course load to find the best fit and balance. While choosing courses, please consider the following:

  • Your career aspirations.
    • There are lots of helpful resources available. Did you take any quizzes about careers or interests with your counselor through Naviance? To review or seek additional information, check the slides from the October College & Career Presentation.
    • Interested in being a nurse? Or an architect? Possibly a carpenter or a geologist? Browse the "Career Clusters" pages for ideas and KHS course suggestions. These pages can also be found at the back of the Course Book. Also, check out the "Career Exploration" information in the Counseling hallway.
  • Post-secondary goals.
    • What are your plans after high school? College? Military? Trade School? We are all on different paths. Let's work on finding yours.
  • Create a rigorous but balanced course load.
    • Challenge yourself, but don't over do it. You need to be a healthy human.
  • Choose classes that correlate to your interests.
    • School might be more fun if you take classes that spark your curiosity. Also, dare to try new things.

The Kirkwood High School grade level counselors will be going over to the middle schools at the end of January 2025 to give presentations to the current 8th graders about course selection for the 2025-2026 school year at KHS.
