Helping Your Teenager Shine on the First Day of High School
The first day of school can be a whirlwind for both teens and parents! Here are some tips to ease anxieties and set your student up for a successful start:
Getting Ready for the Big Day- things to do and reflect on:
- Familiarity Breeds Comfort: Attending Freshman Day on August 16th will provide students a chance to meet other students and for them to get a chance to walk the building. During schedule pick up, students will also have a chance to walk their schedule if they would like. This can help them feel more confident navigating the new environment.
- Let People Hear Your Voice: Role-play introductions with teachers and classmates. Try to participate in discussions and activities during the first day of class. This will set the tone for how you will be perceived by your teacher and other classmates, while also breeding more confidence and enjoyment in the class. The more time that goes by without you speaking up in class will make this harder as the weeks and months go by. Make this a goal for yourself on the very first day. Students who display self-confidence (even if you have to fake it), are less likely to be targets for bullying as well. Let them hear you!
- Remember, You Already Have the Power Within You: Remember, this is not the first time you have undergone a transition. Remember the jitters you felt on the first day of Middle School? What about any life transitions you've been through? The death of a family member, a move to a new house, the birth of a new sibling- were all transitions that you had to adjust and persevere through. How did you do it? Who helped you? What strengths did you use to overcome those obstacles? The power is already within you to do tough things. YOU CAN DO THIS!
- Positive Reinforcement: Parents, talk excitedly about all the new things your child will learn and friends they might meet. You can also talk to your child about how you have overcome obstacles in your own life. Have you ever started a new job for example? Talk to your child about the emotions and discomfort you might have felt and how you got through it.
- Get Involved: The Kirkwood Activities Fair will be August 22nd in the Denver Miller Gym from 6-6:30pm. There are clubs/sports for every kind of student!
The First Day:
- Morning Matters: Establish a relaxed morning routine to avoid last-minute stress. Pack any lunches the night before and have breakfast options ready.
- Goodbyes Can Be Tough: Acknowledge your teens's anxieties and reassure them that you'll pick them up at the end of the day. A short goodbye hug can be helpful.
- Be a Partner with the Teacher: Introduce yourself to the teacher and express any concerns you may have.
Remember, I am here as a resource for you and your teen. Please do not hesitate with any questions or concerns you might have.
